How to and why do I measure in 1 inch to 1 foot scale for my dollhouse?

One thing you need to consider is your dollhouse's scale when you get one! Scales are used so you don't have a dining chair that is too big to fit under the table or a bed that is too small for your doll to sleep in, etc. Hopefully everything will fit in your house together and look like they belong.

You can't have a doll that could not walk through his own front door! I guess you can if you want, but it would get tiresome explaining to people why when they wonder about it. If you do want to do it, then fine, I can think of several reasons where it might be perfect! Gulliver for one! but most people don't really want that.

There are several common scales in miniatures.

If you are asking what is a scale, the simplest way to say it I guess, is with an example.
The most common scale in dollhouse miniatures is 1/12 inch or
1inch in your dollhouse world would equal 1 foot in the full sized world.
It works better with fractions.

If you have a room that is 10' x 12' in your house, in your dollhouse, it would be 10" x 12"

If you are baking a pie in your dollhouse,
and in your real life, would use a 9" pie plate, your dollhouse pie would be 9/12"
which  reduces to 3/4"

Not quite sure how to put a table in here, but,

       in                  in
Real world   Mini World

    1"           =       1/12"
    2"          =        1/6"
    3"          =        1/4"
    4"          =        1/3"
    5"          =        5/12"
    6"          =        1/2"
    7"          =        7/12"
    8"          =        2/3"
    9"          =        3/4"
  10"          =        5/6"
  11"          =       11/12"
   12" or 1'   =         1"
   24" or 2'    =        2"
   36" or 3'      =      3"
and so on!

So if you have a table in real life that is 4'8" long, then in miniature, it would be 4-2/3". If your door mat is 2'x3'6" then your mini one would be 2"x3-1/2"
It is not as hard as people think it is. Play around with it for a bit until you feel comfortable. Print and cut out this table if you need a reference. If you are really math phobic or challenged, let me know and I can help you more. There are other ways, this is just usually the easiest for most people, not all.

There is one thing that is convenient to know. If you are not sure what size something in a store is, pull out a dollar bill. It is 6" long and 2-1/2" wide and makes it easy to approximate size.

One inch to one foot scale is the most common, because it is about the largest size that you can get detail in your work with the least effort but still be small enough to move easily. Because it is fairly easy to work with and the one that has more users than all of the others combined, it is also the cheapest scale.

Next time I will talk about different scales that are available and their advantages and disadvantages.
